Profile :

Are they born to die? Can prophetic missionaries be silent when innocent children are brutally killed by their own parents and relatives?” Let us do something, the children are the gift of God, they have the right to live, let us save them” This was the immediate response of Rev. Fr. Francis Xavier Dirnberger CMF, when the journels exposed the evil of female infanticide in Usilampatti Taluk of Madurai District. This is how The Claretian Mercy Home was constructed at Azhagusirai in1987.The house welcomes and takes in, those children who might have been killed otherwise. From its inauguration on 27th December 1987 to this present day the institution serves as a solace for malnourished children and the victims of female infanticide. It has opened its doors for the old people too who have no body to care. The Sisters of Deena Sevana Saba are collaborating with the Claretians in taking care of the babies and the old people.

The Second Provincial Chapter made a preferential option to work among the dalits in Tamil Nadu for their upliftment. Our objective, as servants of the Word is to work in solidarity with dalits towards attaining their aspirations for social justice in the church and the society. KAVASAM marked the first mile stone by its opening on 08.11.2003.

The Vision :
Through the means of Education and development Kavasam aims to transform the society on behalf of the poor and the less privileged.
Preferred Recipients :

The outcaste, the sick, the handicapped, women and children were the target people of Jesus. Following the footsteps of Him, Kavasam opts to work with these people of Jesus. In the Indian society since the Dalits in general and Dalits Christians in particular suffer cumulatively the bondage they become preferred recipients. The Dalits constitute around 27% of the total in Indian population. Nearly 80% of the Indian Christians are Dalits

Target area :
The Center aims to reach out its service to the whole of Tamilnadu. At present the beneficiaries are selected from Claretian missions of Tamilnadu. The office of Kavasam is presently located near Kakkanur, Villupuram district.
The lines of actions :
1.

5.
Art & Cultural Programme - The music, dance and other art forms of the natives are at the verge of extinction and those of the dominant are projected as the culture and the art of the country. Development of masses includes promotion of their culture too. Training and popularization of Dalit and folk arts are part and parcel of the mission of Kavasam. Cultural Groups called ‘Veera Mulakkam’ in Kakanurand Vettri Murasu Kalaikuzhu in Villiavarambal are formed for the development of the culture.
6.
Alternative Health Programme - Health care has become the monopoly of multinational drug companies that solely promote allopathic medicine. The herbal and home remedies have virtually extinct. The poor apart from spending their lifelong earning they also suffer side effects of allopathic drugs. Resuscitating the nature and indigenous curative methods are sure ways of integral development. Therefore training on reflexiotherapy, naturopathy, physiotherapy and preparation of herbal medicine are given by Kavasam. Regular treatment is also given for the sick people on every Saturdays.
7.
Integrity of Nature - In the name of development the nature is ruthlessly exploited and the natural resources are fast depleting. The merciless treatments meted out to the nature primarily affect the indigenous people who feel part of the ecosphere. Initiating actions towards the promotion of the integrity of creation is an integral part of the program of the center. Promotion of organic farming and popularization of eco friendly pesticides and manure gain priority in this regard.
8.
Promotion of Life - One can share the gift of life with others by donating blood and organ. While the blood is donated when one is alive and the later can be done while living or after death by executing a will with the consent of either parent or spouse. Kavasam has already launched the awareness programs among the people of Kanai Panchayat union, Villupuram district.

2) AIDS Ministry
It is the ‘NEED OF THE HOUR’ to promote self-dignity of the people who are living with HIV/AIDS. A random sample survey from the T.B. Hospital at Tambaram Sanitorium reveals that majority of the infected persons hail from the District of Kancheepuram. There are many incidents where the terminally ill HIV/AIDS patients are abandoned by their own family members in the hospital itself. An open invitation by the Holy Mother Church and the Declaration “THAT THEY MAY HAVE LIFE” set by the 23 rd General Chapter of Claretians 2003, impels to work in this field so that the self-dignity and life is restored.
In order to reach out the goal of promotion of life, we have a strategical project as ‘Restoring Self Dignity of HIV/AIDS Positives in Rural Areas of Kancheepuram District Through Mobile Awareness Campaign, Referrel Services and Capacity Building’ through three important process.
